WhatsApp New Breach/Phishing Target
Did you know according to the latest research a new phishing website is created every 20 seconds?
Recently hackers have backed off of email phishing, a bit, due to improved security of email providers with increased filtering functionality but ironically, they are still targeting perceived higher security communication tools like; Skype, WhatsApp, and SMS.
In fact these forms of communication actually are not secure...
Hackers target these options because there is no filtering of suspicious links within these platforms. For example, WhatsApp even displays a snippet of the webpage linked in the message (see graphic below) meanwhile hackers create identical looking websites to the original. This seemingly useful feature helps provide the little bit of legitimacy needed to get users to click on the link, route them to the phishing site, and thus give up personal info.
So although these tools are convenient, they also fall short in securing your organization. Awareness is the first step in staying out of security pitfalls, best practices and a knowledgeable IT partner are the next.
Be aware of suspicious links within WhatsApp...they may be a link to a fake website created to steal your information!
